Why Weight?
I am sick of scales! I do not mean to sound like anyone of the hundreds of patients I see on a regular basis for weight loss, but at the risk of doing so – I HATE SCALES!
Admittedly, my reasons differ from the majority of my patients. Unlike my fellow man or woman who has taken their precious time and money to consult my practice on the all but even-tempered subject of weight loss, I am sick of the expectations of said scale, not the numbers.
People seek advice from me on a daily basis for ‘weight loss’, yet I purposefully deny them that ‘luxury’ because I know something they do not. I am keenly aware of the scale and its malevolence. Relying purely on the scale as a measure of successful weight management leads to failure.
When I write an initial eating plan for a patient I purposefully make it caloric neutral. This means the number of calories I determine based on their calculated metabolic rate, activity level, and a few other variables will be such that the scale will not change. I do not want people starting a weight loss program to lose weight. There – I said it.
Anyone, and I mean anyone can design a weight loss program. Look at what is available out there – it is very simple to change the scale. A number of so called diet programs, weight loss centers, and the like are available to help people, in the short term, change the numbers on the scale.
Weight loss, in this arena is nothing more than caloric restriction, limiting foods, and in some cases starvation. When you starve your body, it does exactly as God intended. It starts protecting fat. It starts storing fat.
Weight loss plans fail. Diets fail. Part of their failure is based on what we are using to measuring success, that wretched scale! Scale weight is misleading, uninformative, and essentially a terrible way to judge the accuracy or strength of any weight loss program.
Let me give you a simple, yet effective solution. Forget the scale. Focus on other objective measures of success. A true health program has so many other objective variables to follow! I could list a number, but let me give you just a few:
* Body composition (lean muscle vs. fat)
* Fat loss
* Clothes changes
* Cholesterol level
* Blood pressure
* Energy level
* Sleeping better
* Improved mood
* Better sex life
* Less worry/stress
Let me sum it up with this simple statement: weight loss will occur, but not until you are healthy. Health can occur before the weight loss, but not the other way around. See why I hate the scale? Get healthy THEN lose the weight! I invite you to read more and learn about your healthy options, because, as I discussed above, Why Weight?
